Jennifer said to a colleague at work last week:
“I am so excited! Did you see all the green?”
They replied:
“No, What green?”
Jennifer was quiet a moment:
“the green
the green buds
The autumn rains,
and the grass is waking up.
The buds are everywhere,
all over the hills around us
under foot
You don’t see them all?”
our hills do not follow the greeting-card calendar seasons.
our hills green in winter,
the first buds awaken from their slumber
after the first autumn rains
sheltering under the protective stalks of their gold-grey parents of summer
come winter
they will stand up in full green glory
to lift, and refresh
the sky

Interesting that in Minnesota we are saying good bye to all that is green. The yellows and oranges that signaled fall are also quickly disappearing and soon to be replaced by our first snow of the season. Change is inevitable, a new season will come whether I am prepared for it or not. I am reminded that I have experienced 75 of these fall to winter transitions and each one seems to come more quickly than the one before. I will look for God in the dark, freezing cold winter just as I have in the bright warm spring and summer. I have the assurance that unlike the seasons, God is unchanging and with that knowledge I am at peace.
