OFF-THE-GRID LIVIN’ PART 8C: DROUGHT

November 10, 2016 By Administrator Leave a Comment

Last year was the worst so far in the California Drought. Our area averages about 21 inches of rain annually, and in 2015 we got 6.

Most of that came late winter in the form of pathetic drizzles. Short merciful acts of charity on the part of skinny clouds limping across the sky in late March. By the time they did show, the hills and trees had long since given up their gold/green hues, Battered grey by the dry wind and cold winter sun.

Still, the land proved opportunist, and resilient. I don’t understand the awareness of land, or how it weighs consequence, but it does. Those 6 inches would be all it would get, and the land would not loose the opportunity to live, love, and produce. In the months before, when rain should have been there but wasn’t, the trees self pruned. Pulling their juices as deep within themselves as possible, fruitless branches of luxury were drained and left to snap off in the fall breezes. Also in a preparation, last years parental grasses crumbled, bowed lower than its grandparents or great grandparents, to self dry mulch.  Making the earth-cradle for their seedlings as well made as possible.

Then everything waited… waited… waited for those 6 inches.

Then snap.

Instead of the luxuriant two to three months of green, it was compressed into two weeks.  The grass shot up young and green, touched, pollinated, thrust out their foxtail seeds, and quickly and graciously faced their martyrdom in robes of gold.

The trees likewise raced to construct new banks of chlorophyl solar panels. Leaves shifting from fresh viridian to stubbornly mature green umber. Then settled into a conservative summer of drawing life from the light of the severe summer sky.

There was chance to make it happen. One chance to grow. One chance to love.  One chance to make legacy.  It wasn’t a lovely chance, but when the land took it it took it head first.

Awareness and consequence. The lesson this land keeps bringing me back to. Awareness and consequence.

“Listen.

Listen.

Hush my child.

Listen.

Pay attention or you may miss this…”

Sketching, folding, tracing, resetching, transforming three-dimensional forms into two-dimensional forms back into three-dimensional forms.

It's quite the dance, thank goodness good music helps.

So here it is. Four years later. I have worked on So here it is. Four years later.

I have worked on this painting on and off for the last four years.

Originally, I intended this to be a completely unashamedly joyful piece, created as we were coming out of the lockdown.

But the world kept burning, and the piece at the time felt shallow.

I put it away, pulled it out, put it away again.

It changed. Changed again.

And again.

I am finishing it here.

Still joyful, but more of a ‘NONETHELESS’.

The world burns. But nonetheless there is love, and joy, and wonder.

The single greatest act of rebellion I know.

@joshuat.manion is always an inspiring Model. One @joshuat.manion is always an inspiring Model. One of the few I know with the nerve control to cause isolated back muscles to "pop" when I am giving anatomy demonstrations.

But his poses are pure lyrical poetry as well!

RAVEN’S BREAD. Oil on Panel, 21”X11.5” I am RAVEN’S BREAD. Oil on Panel, 21”X11.5”

I am rolling on a much bigger project… but needed to jump-start the muse with a fast and fun composition. So I dug up an old paper figure from a previous commission, whipped out a paper raven, and put them both under a black light (second image) to do playful riff of an ancient narrative.

felt good.

FALLOW STAG, oil on panel Just finished in time t FALLOW STAG, oil on panel

Just finished in time to look back over 2024. I have started to compare Off-the-grid living to driving a 1966 Volkswagon Van... It just requires constant tinkering. And BOY have I ever tinkered on the land this year. New well pump, rebuilding inverters, expanded food growing, reworking solar panels, new batteries... Not as much time studio-painting, but lots of time land-creating.

So this one has been slow cooking as I have been creating: THE FALLOW STAG. It has been an apt point of meditation during a season when it seems like my creative studio has been allowed to “go fallow” while I put my energy elsewhere.

My thoughts on the creation of the piece in the comments below for the curious:
