This year I was challenged to make all those golems into more permanent, displayable sculptures. Which means I have to slow down the process, and plan more to make it more durable golem. We'll see what this adds up to!

Between finishing a hard school year and post-art-fair-blues, my muse has been neglected and she’s grumpy about it. Yesterday was a “let’s make up” studio day, starting with a barrage of gestures on newsprint from found imagery.

I completed this series of 6 paintings almost two decades ago, separately titled "Grey Room"s, exploring the theme of the crucifixion, both as an image of faith and an image of human suffering. The series was a labor of love. But it also asked questions of our indifference to seeing images of vulnerability and pain.

So like I started saying. After loosing faith in the image, I put this piece away for over a year.

Then in conversation with my creative team, I realized the problem. For as much as I wanted an unapologetic celebration of joy… I was not in that space, and neither was the world as I see it.

I still think the piece will be joyful and loving. But more TENACIOUS. More “in-spite-of”. More joy as rebellion. A robust Saint Laurence kind of love and joy.

The question will be, can I get my arms, and my brushes, around it?

Part 1 of 2
This project disappeared off my feed over a year ago, for good reason.

It is always alarming when a painting that so much invested in it… just fizzles out. Staring at a canvas, trying to problem solve, but in my heart of hearts knowing I just don’t believe in the image any more. It is hard, but it isn’t the first time. And often when I come back to the work, sometimes years later. They become some of my strongest paintings.

I had intended the piece to be unapologetically happy and optimistic. A post-pandemic celebration.

But a year into it. I just didn’t believe in the image anymore.

So I did the hard thing, and put it away.

I have to try something I have never done before. It must almost break me, but it must be also be fun.

So, I’ve never tried painting an inferno from the inside before. Having a hard time finding photo references for that experience oddly enough…

This was one of my favorite paintings. I made it back in 2016 during a major transition in my studio...

Then the famed GREAT DISASTER OF 2019 occurred, in the painting was horrifically damaged.

The image never let go of me, and at last I'm going back to repaint it. Now with almost a decade of deeper studies in light and color. And I think I'm loving it even more!

3 years… I was about to post and suddenly realized I have been working on this piece for 3 YEARS!

Not all in one go mind you. It started as an ecorche’ exercise in clay, which sat in a corner for a spell, then caught a vision for a painting. Then the painting sat in a dusty corner as other projects demanded attention.

Now it’s done! And I can feel something shifted in me and the studio.

I think I will call it:

THE PAPER ARCHANGEL is done!

I posted a video of this piece Monday, and here is a still post of the commission for closer enjoyment. This was such a fun commission. The client wanted an archangel based on imagery of St Michael, but dictated that they did not want to see the painting in process, just an unveiling of the final piece over the holidays in their new home. And that every member of my family had to work on it.

The parameters of the commission really pushed my “A-Game” levels as a painter, but still gave my creative team and I loads of creative freedom.

One of our concerns: evil, darkness, and dark power are naturally fascinating. Goodness tends to be portrayed as soft, delicate, and rather boring (think of almost every Christmas angel) This time we wanted to make a fascinating, powerful good.

THE PAPER ARCHANGEL is done!

This was an incredible commission. The client wanted an archangel based on imagery of St Michael, but dictated that they did not want to see the painting in process, just an unveiling of the final piece over the holidays in their new home. And that every member of my family had to work on it.

As promised, the piece was unveiled two days after Christmas, so now I can show you all what I have been up to!

The collaboration with my family was a blast. I will be sharing the paper sculpture we used to inspire this piece later. I crafted the body. My son designed and constructed the armor. My daughter made the angelic spear, and my wife created the wings. Then loads of debate, discussion and critique all through the painting process.

In this season, it was good to meditate on a powerful good, a creature as fearsome as it was beautiful, instead of the darkness that can take center stage.
